PuTTY won't connect. Help please!

Post by saenim »

Hi there,

I followed the steps for this down to the bone from http://tinkernut.com/archives/2387. Got to the part where I open PuTTY for the first time and try to connect to the router. No go. Get a "Connection closed by remote host" error message. Probably helps to know that I'm also getting a "Limited or no connectivity" message from windows once I've reset the TCP/IP settings in network settings to auto-update IP address. Any ideas, suggestions?

Thanks!

Did you set putty to use the telnet protocol the first time (port 23)? Putty defaults to SSH (port 22), which openwrt doesn't have running until you set a root password.

No idea why you're getting a "limited or no connectivity" error when resetting the network settings. Does rebooting help?

Yes, it's telnetting on 23. I've already tried two computers and numerous restarts.

I've tried that project with Tinkernut's video, too.
And I couldn't connect with putty after I removed thee lan cable.
I tried it several times! Many times.
And at the end I set the Asus router IP adress to 192.168.2.120 instead of using a Class B adress.
And it worked! I really dunno if that's the problem.
But I had the same problem like you and that was the only thing that was different from the video.

Edit: oh sry I saw now that your problem is at the very beginning.

Ok, first of all, if you need help with tinkernut's video, you might want to ask him. I can only provide help with the original tutorial on this site.

Second, usually problems connecting the router are a result of network configuration problems on your PC. This is because your PC is trying to route all IP traffic out your wireless or LAN network to the internet, instead of to the router. I know for a fact that if you configure the router to have a 192.168.x.x address and your home network also shares the same subnet, you will have issues. I solved this problem by changing my home network to a 192.168.24.0 subnet, but your approach might need to be different depending on how your own network is configured.

Thank you, I will try the tutorial here. No idea how to create a subnet on my wireless, or how to fix my laptop (for example) to connect to the router once auto-ip is on. Even if it is not connected to the internet...
