I am new to the board. I am also not a programmer, just someone who enjoys messing with electronic toys. I would like to program my wl520gu to be a wireless music bridge - play music on a computer and have it wirelessly transmit to my amplifier for the stereo using the router. I have purchased a usb sound card to plug into the ASUS, but I am unsure which firmware will work best and be simple and reliable. I am using Windows 7 -- that is why my Linksys Wireless Music Bridge will no longer work.
Would it be possible for someone to just email me the firmware ready to go? Could I use the CDER backup system to restore to the new firmware? Any help is very much appreciated.

Making the ASUS WL520gu music bridge
Re: Making the ASUS WL520gu music bridge
Hi Paul,
I think I understand what you are trying to do, though I have never used the Linksys product you speak of.
Unfortunately, ready to use firmware is not available, nor is it my intention to provide it.
This project is for people who like to tinker and are willing to spend the time to learn the ins and outs of embedded Linux running on a wireless router. It is not intended to be a drop in solution for any given problem, but a platform for people to experiment with repurposing consumer hardware to do things the manufacturer never intended.
It is conceivable that the router could be used to make remote speakers. It's also possible that someone on the forums has done this, but I have not. Unless someone is willing to invest the time and effort to create a ready to install firmware package for you, I think you would be better off buying a commercial product that does what you want. It will save you much time and frustration, which unless you are doing this for the experience, will not be much fun for you.

Re: Making the ASUS WL520gu music bridge
Mightyohm, Thank you for taking the time to reply. I have always found that launching from the shoulders of giants is usually easier than starting from scratch on every project. I had read that there were choices on whether tomato, openwrt or other firmware might work best. If someone has experience with these firmwares for sound output with the 520 gu, then that would be helpful. If someone has gone even further and actually has a usb soundcard working with this router, I would like to know the details. Who knows, maybe there is even a business opportunity with the right firmware. I know there are a lot of frustrated Linksys Music Bridge owners, like me, who bought the commercial product that does not work with Windows 7.
So, if there is a good programmer who wants to possibly explore a business opportunity and is willing to share their work, I hope to hear from them.
