Rescue board as programmer

After taking a quick look at the schematic it looks like the rescue shield could be used as a programmer through the SPI port. Of course, a new Arduino sketch would have to be developed. Is this correct?

What do you mean by "through the SPI port"?
It should be possible to use the Rescue Shield as a general purpose AVR programmer. As you mentioned, a new Arduino sketch needs to be developed.
