It seems like over the past year and a half many people have had a lot of trouble finding a USB-audio adapter that works with this project.
If you have one that works, please post the specific model # here along with any other helpful notes (ie. had to install kmod-alsa, change sampling rates, etc.).
I'll start:

Here is an Ebay search you can click on for a C-Media USB Sound adapter that uses the CM119 chipset.
This chipset seems to be very common and WORKS!
I got mine on Ebay for less than five dollars delivered from China.

The Speedlink Vigo (SL-8850) worked straight from the box, after following Tinkernut's instruction video. Bought it in the Netherlands for €16.30.

I'm guessing this one will work too, as they state compatibility with major Linux distros.
If you simply must have optical out, this looks like the way to go.

In reference to the post above by T-Jo about the Speelink Vigo, I wanted to find out if it uses the same chip as the other adapters that are known to work. I sent a message to Speed-link.com and asked them the question. Their reply says that the Vigo USB adapter uses the C-Media CM108 chip, so we should be able to add the CM108 to our list of chips that are known to work with this project.

I really like this initiative! Still some questions; is it just the chip that is in the audio adapter or is there anything more to look at?
If it's just the chip the selection of the right adapter becomes easier.

Is there a way to find out the chipset used in the audio adapter from within OpenWrt?

Maybe this website will help, if you can determine your PID and VID using the dmesg command.

jeroen94704 - Good question. I'm not sure if there is anything you can do beyond look at the dmesg output.
middelbh - The chipset is the most important attribute. There are probably a few ways that a manufacturer could still create incompatible hardware (perhaps using an unsupported audio output channel on a device with more than one) but if you stick with one that is well known to work, you should be ok...
