How about the Linksys nslu2? Its compact ,a little more powerful and can even run Debian. Used prices in the UK seem to be comparable to the wl-520gu new. It is a little harder to find though and probably discontinued.

EDIT: Just realised that hte nslu2 doesn't actually have WIFI. DOH!
Linksys WRT160NL seems like a good alternative with Wireless-N though.

The Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH seems like a good upgrade. Available for around 60 euro. 400Mhz; 32MB Flash; 64MB RAM. Should be enough for the new MPD that has grown so much.
The only possible problem might be the Atheros processor which is MIPS and not MIPSEL. So as far as I can tell the packages provided by Jeff will not work (can someone confirm this?).

Netgear has a new model out (DGND3700) that seems promising. Dual core 400 MHz processor, gigabit lan, 2.4 + 5 GHz channels and 128 MB flash memory. No support for OpenWRT or DD-WRT yet, but hopefully this will materialize before long:

It's pretty expensive, but maybe prices will come down over time, and maybe they will release an ADSL-less version of this router at some point (which should make it cheaper too).

WRT54GC-TM is also working fine for me. It's a bit expensive but... well... it's powerful!
Eventually have to provide photos of my device built into the box taken from old TV Sat receiver. Unfortunatelly - after I changed my job - spare time is worth more than gold for me and is even as hard to find as gold... ;)

Regards!

Starting from $100 it's way more expensive though.

Hi,

I managed yesterday to install and configure my Linksys WRT160NL as an Internet Radio. It works OK, but I have a question.

How many processes MPD needs. If I run a PS, it lists 4 MPD processes with the same size. Is this OK?
Now, I have about 2% free memory and also 2% free program space, and it's not playing anything.

Thank you.

Mine has 3 MPD processes. 2% free space is kind of low. Especially on your WRT160NL with 32MB of memory. Could your show us the output of 'top'? Also, please make a new topic instead of 'hijacking' this one about alternatives to the WL-520gU.
