Serial Port Flub

Post by Jim Ryan »

Well, I've received all of the parts needed to create this beauty, and immediately ran into a problem.
My cheap soldering iron would not allow me to cleanly remove the solder from the 4 serial port pin locations (GND TX RX 3.3V). I now have a mess here that I may be able to repair if I can get a clean view of how this board looked before the damage was done. Does anyone have a good clean close-up of the serial port location without the serial pins installed? It would be nice to see both sides of the board to ensure that all is well once repairs are completed.

I'd hate to have to buy another router If I can repair this one and move ahead.

As a side note, does anyone have a suggestion for a good soldering iron for this level of work?
What are you using? I restore vintage and antique radios as well.

Thanks for your time,
Jim Ryan

I am using a Weller WES51 and like it a lot. You can get a wide variety of tips and it has more than enough power for most electronics work.

Here's a pic of the topside without the serial pins installed:

Backside, I don't have a pic of the PCB without the pins installed.
