Tuning controll knob

Discussion about my Wifi Radio project at http://mightyohm.com/wifiradio/ or my WL-520gU talk at NOTACON.

Tuning controll knob

Post by djmasterg »

Question straight to Jeff:

Is it possible to use some kind of potentiometer for tuning, that has no limit - you can turn it around, and to select the station - you could use a push action, or it could be step potentiometer. I am not that much into electronics, as I am into open source, hence my question.

Regards
Greg.

PS. The reason for that is I have like 20+ radiostations and the knob is getting very sensitive. Maybe I should change it to different one with other resistance?

Maybe something like this will be good for a large list of radiostations http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10K-ohm-103-m ... 230f8dee0f

You could use something like that.

I originally envisioned the radio having a small number of station presets, around 10, and this works well with an ordinary pot.

You could use something called a rotary encoder to send pulses to the microcontroller, and use software to interpret the pulses and select a station from an arbitrarily long list. I think at least one of the projects discussed on this forum used a rotary encoder in place of the potentiometer I used, there might even be some code available...
