RS232 level shifter

Post by RadiatedAnt »

Hi I have a quick question, will this level shifter fit my needs for the wl-520gu router? http://alldav.com/index.php?main_page=p ... ucts_id=11
if so, how do I provision it to power the 3.3v? I know the vcc pin is unused if I go FTDI route I'm guessing the chip gets its 3.3v power from the usbs 5v. Can I go ahead and let the router supply this voltage or is it risky?

That adapter looks fine, and I don't see any problem with using the router's 3.3V supply to power it. Don't forget to hook up the ground as well. You'll be using all 4 pins on the serial header.

I would recommend that you look into the max3233 chip. It's made specifically to run on 3.3v volts.
