Tomato Firmware based radio and Roku report

Post by mtennant »

The guy responsible for modifying the stock Tomato firmware for USB routers (Ray Van Tassle) has published his secret sauce for Internet radio.

See: https://docs.google.com/document/edit?i ... tkJ0&hl=en#

I haven't done it yet, but thought I'd share the link with others that might be interested.

I've officially retired my WL-520GU radio in favor of a Roku box, the XDS.

Got it on sale the other day for $75 plus shipping.

Not only does it play Internet Radio (including Pandora), but Internet streaming video too.

They have three different boxes, with the cheapest starting at $59.

What router is he using in that example you posted?

I think you are correct that devices like the Roku box will make this hack obsolete... It used to be that a streaming device cost hundreds of dollars, now they are avaialble for $50 as you mentioned. Then again, people seem to love hacking routers, so there will probably always be someone interested in cracking open their Asus router to see what they can do with it. :D

Have fun hacking the Roku. I'm interested to hear if the stock firmware is any good, and I wonder long until someone gets an open source version going...
