Re: Homemade GM tube
Hi Jeff, Following your initial suggestion you gave me one year back, I worked for a while using commercial SBM19 and CTC6 russian tubes to make cosmic rays (muons) detectors based on the coincidence principle. All of them work very well, and here is a picture of the latest instrument I made. At the...

Re: Homemade GM tube
Jeff, I made a variable voltage that can be set anywhere from 450V to 5KV. I always test my different home made GM at variuos voltage. Thank you for the first link. I took a look at it, and found , among other interesting things, that the fill gas must not be contaminated , specially by oxigen. This ...

Homemade GM tube
Hi Jeff, I hope you can give me a good advice once more. I am using GM tubes as sensors to detect cosmic rays. Recently I had the chance to cut up one of them and have seen their simple design. Thus I began to make one sample by myself. Since then I made various pieces, changing each time tube mater...

Re: Gas filling of Geiger tube
Jeff, you are absolutely right! Following your hint, I cut the cap near the point you indicated with an arrow. I found that the clearer part which supports the small glass tube is a metal little cup, and the circular line you indicated is where the tube is welded at that cup. The darker part is the ...

Re: Gas filling of Geiger tube
Hello Jeff, here are two more pictures. On left side of the first image, you can see the negative cap with a small glass tube having a hole through wich the wire passes. The wire is much thinner than that hole, its diameter being 0.5 mm. This cap is electrically connected to the GM tube body. On the...

Gas filling of Geiger tube
Hi all, I got from my sypplier a badly crushed soviet CTC6 GM tube. As it was unusable, I opened it up to see how it is made inside. The attached picture shows the whole interior of it. The inspection reveals that the gas contained into the tube may stays there provided a sealed chamber is formed by...
