Re: No signal from my geiger tube

Check out my Geiger counter kit: http://mightyohm.com/geiger I sell a minimal version of the kit that includes a high quality PCB and all electronic components needed to build the kit. You can supply your own case and SI-3BG, SI-1G, SBM-20 or CTS-5 Geiger tube. It would be useful to have this kit as...

Re: No signal from my geiger tube

Have you verified that your high voltage supply is working and the voltage is correct?
Do you have a radioactive sample for testing or are you relying on background radiation?

Re: rugged case

Greg, Plastic will shield some radiation from reaching the tube, particularly beta particles. Thicker plastic will have more shielding effects, so I'd use thin low density plastic where possible. If you're mainly interested in observing trends, this may not be an issue as it's the change in measured...

Re: HV Circuit

I built and tested the circuit and modified it as needed. I used simulations as well but it was mainly cut and try on the bench.

Re: HV Circuit

I'm not aware of an article that covers the math. I think it would be challenging to write a formula for the output voltage, but the frequency of oscillation or duty cycle might be more approachable. Still not trivial, but would be interesting to try. I've had some success simulating the circuit in ...

Re: Homemade GM tube

What voltage are you biasing the tubes with? You may find that your DIY tubes require a higher voltage than the commercial tubes. There are some details on the construction of geiger counter tubes in Knoll's book https://phyusdb.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/radiationdetectionandmeasurementbyknoll.pdf...

Re: HV Circuit

There's a description of the circuit in Tom Napier's article in Nuts and Volts.

Re: Orange lines

Can you post a photo of the damage?

And yes, the more orange parts of the board are the conductors!

You'll have to bridge the gap somehow using a short piece of wire.
